Import duty on ink cartridges UK - VAT on importing ink refill kits

Can anyone inform me what the VAT and import duty are on ink cartridges? Also, I forgot to mention that I would like to know the same information about ink refill kits.

Whenever I have a doubt about VAT and import duty, I head to the HMRC website. It has everything you could possibly want to know about products being imported and exported in the UK. I just linked you up to its list of duty and VAT rates for different items.

According to this list, you are going to have to pay 6.5 percent duty and the standard VAT charges on ink cartridges. Since it does not say differently, I am going to say the same rates apply to ink refill kits.

Excellent, thanks! Should have thought of that. Any other websites I am missing out on that I should know about?

In regard to figuring out duty charges and VAT, try Duty Calculator. By typing in your product, the country where you are exporting/importing, insurance, etc., this website will calculate the approximate duty and VAT you will have to pay.

Duty Calculator is a time saver and you should add it to your browser’s favourites bar if you do a lot of importing/exporting.

You forgot to mention that you can also find rates by typing in a product’s commodity code on the HMRC website.

My apologies! That’s what I meant when I said HMRC provides a lot of information. You can search for your product’s commodity code, or if you already know it, enter it into the search bar. All tariff information will appear for your product.

You have the choice to search by import or export. You obviously want to search for ink cartridges by import.

I can’t seem to find any duty, VAT, regulations, etc. regarding ink cartridges that are imported in printers.

HMRC recently lifted a prohibition on importing ink cartridges over a certain weight. Similar products had been used in bomb threats on aircraft. The prohibition is now in place for all ink-carrying devices such as printers, fax machines, copiers, etc.

Any ink or toner that is included in these devices must be removed and shipped separately. You will have to pay the standard duty and VAT listed above. Authorities hope to lift this ban in June.
