Diamond jewellery manufacturing - China vs. India

I just have a question about sourcing jewellery. I know the majority of polished diamonds come from China and India, but what are the main differences between manufacturing in the two? Im looking to set up business and am not sure which country is better to source diamond jewellery from.

Good question. People don’t know much about this.

Due to advanced technology and the rapid growth of India’s economy, most manufactured diamonds have moved from Israel to there. According to a past chairman of India’s Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, currently, "India spends US$10 per carat on the polishing and cutting of diamonds, against China's US$17 and South Africa's US$40 to US$60.” On top of this, India is trying to further lower its manufacturing costs by securing sources of rough diamonds.

India is on top of the market right now, which makes them cheaper, and is looking to strengthen its place in it. Who isn’t?

However, when you’re looking to open up a trade business, sourcing diamond jewellery from abroad, you have to look at future potential and which country will lead manufacturing in the diamond industry. Although India is ahead now, China is close on its heels.

      • China’s manufacturing logistics are already second to none.
      • China’s labour force is efficient and cheap.
      • China is very good for business; they’ve loads of tax incentives which makes manufacturers want to stay or set-up shop.
      • Hong Kong is a major hub for the diamond jewellery trade.

Also, some say that because India’s workers are seeing salaries rise faster in general, labour costs will continue to drop in China, while rising in India. This is definitely something for a tradesman to ponder.

The quality of the diamond jewellery produced in both China and India is exceptional. Indians, however, tend to be more original with their products, while China tends to copy. Things can get so cheap in China, that the quality gets diminished.

      Also, to think about:

      • There isn’t a huge cultural difference between India and the West; it’s easier to communicate with India.
      • Most top jewellery retailers source from India.
      • India’s manufacturers tend not to source their rough diamonds from places in Africa that are fueled by civil unrest; they’re more ethical.

Keep all this in mind when researching for sources. Realise that India is not much more expensive than China, however, that could change in the near future.

Good luck to you, and all who go into this business.
