What is the best shipping method to post inexpensive items sold on eBay?

I want to start out selling vintage collectables on ebay. They are fairly cheap and don't weigh much so post cost isn't going to kill me. I haven't sold on ebay before (only bought) and wonderd what the procedure is.

I'm assuming once I've received payment by Paypal I post it (obvious). But what's to stop the customer turning round and claiming they never received the item, unless it's recorded delivery which is obv more expensive than second class for example. Is it just best to send everything recorded by royal mail or is there a safer cheaper option? Any safegaurds for sellers in this instance?

      Thanks in advance for replies.

      Hi Neil,

      Welcome to Wholesale Forum

Obviously cheaper postage (or even better, free postage) will increase your sales.

If you are shipping inexpensive items, you could post them using the cheapest unrecorded method, and bear the cost of lost items/false claims. The idea is that you will offset those losses with the sales you will gain by offering free shipping. If, over time, you find out that the costs from lost items/false claims exceed the gains, shift to recorded delivery irrespective of the items value.

If however the items you are shipping are expensive, or they bring you a profit margin that is less than twice your cost price, we recommend you opt for a recorded delivery method, and pass that cost to your customers.

Thanks for the advice, will prob just bear losses unless it happens to frequently. Postage sometimes wont cost me anything anyway as i can ship from where i work. This should help me build a bit of a contingency and offset any losses made, or extra profits if not

      Again thanks for the feedback.
