Selling on ebay is tough to do successfully for many people, and if you're one of the few who know the secrets of the site, then it's a great place to make a bundle. Promoting your site on ebay is much like promoting the goods and/or services you auction. Ebay sellers can follow these easy steps and find that the traffic to their ebay website has experienced a sudden increase:

      Basic Checklist Items:

      1. Make sure you have a good username. Ask yourself if it's easy to remember, easy to spell, and if it represents your business on ebay. A name like CiNdYlU42 isn't going to be as easy as, say, dvd_warehouse, or something like it.

      2. Write an “About Me” page. Make it easy to read and put links to your auctions within the text. Always make sure your most relevant information is at the top of the page.

      3. Make a logo! Any business that wants to be taken seriously (and seen) now days needs something to set it apart from the other businesses on ebay. In order to sell on ebay, you have to be seen, right? Make sure it's easy to read, fits into your “about me” section, and matches with your auction color scheme.

      4. Join a professional ebay sellers group. They're a bit like BBB. You can search for a site online that will help to give you the internet credibility you need to gain the trust of customers who haven't worked with you before.

      5. Use Meta Tags! I can never say this enough to anyone who wants to promote their website. If you don't know what they are, meta tags are the things in HTML that tell search engines what your website is all about. Don't over use your keywords though or you'll be marked as spam. Put meta tags in your about me page, and when you post long term products in your ebay store (if you have one), you should put meta tags there too.

There are lots of other things to do as well, but if you follow these 5 steps then you can promote your site more efficiently than by just posting links on your ebay pages.

So my ebay name is all set up and I just made my website (I'm a content writer so I know about the content stuff from all the stuff I do), and I am starting to get feedback on ebay, which means my products are being seen/sold. What next?

As a content writer you should know all the basics I covered earlier in the thread, but there are a few other things you could do that you might not be doing for your website or ebay page. If you follow these steps, selling on ebay won't be so difficult:

      - Use linking partners. Affiliate marketing is right up your alley if you're already familiar with SEO writing and the like. Are there any sites out there linking to your “about me” page, website, or other place of business? And in kind, are you linking to any businesses outside of your own. While outbound links are big no-no's in the majority of content writers' SEO bibles, incorporating outbound links to other websites that are related to you will actually give you more publicity, as those websites will more than likely link to you as well (as long as you have spoken to each other before hand and have reached an agreement to advertise for the other).

      - Use ebay's Cross-Promotion Connection. All you have to do is go to “my ebay” > “my account” > “cross promotion connections”. Through this, you can have up to 10 cross promotion connections, which means more marketing for you, your affiliates, and your customers.

      - Market after the sell. Just because a customer bought an item from your website or ebay page doesn't mean you should just let them go and hope they come back. Market to those people who buy from you. Offer them discounts on future purchases, thank them, get feedback on ebay (positive, not negative) from them, and maybe even give them a thank you gift or other free item for their purchase. If they bought a barbie doll for their little girl, wouldn't it be great if it came with a free fake makeup kit too? Incentive is what you need to get people to come back, and ebay sellers so often don't think about this tiny fact.

      - Save money through linking to your website. A great way to sell on ebay is to sell outside of it. Tell your customers that it would be cheaper for them to buy your item outside of ebay on your website. Or you could direct people to your website first, and then you could send them to ebay. Your fees will still be lower that way.

      - Link to your ebay store through your website. If you have several of the same products, you can let the system re-list the item. It helps search engines like froogle to direct traffic to you because of the recent listing of your item. When you link to your items on your website, selling on ebay becomes easier because you are increasing the chances of customers visiting your pages. Ebay even has software available to you that allows you to post items on your website from ebay.

I'm promoting my website in pretty much the ways you've just said, but i'm not really getting anywhere. My website's pretty basic, but i've got a few logos I use and I email people whenever i've got a new product up. What should I do different?

selling on ebay or any website really is an uphill battle until you get yourself situated with repeat clients, good advertising, and a strong website for your products.

I had a lot of trouble w/my logos at first. Try this: make sure your logos are all consistent and can fit in a box like your about me section. Use a template that has your logo in it.

I was reading the other day in an SEO journal that it is very important to use a professional address if you are sending out e-newsletters or other marketing materials through email. It might make a difference.

Exactly your email is something you could do that's really simple, and when you give out your business card it's automatic free advertising. Also, be sure to promote your domain name in your emails! It's a great way to increase traffic.

When you post to a message board like this or on ebay or wherever, post your domain name inside it. It can't hurt, and you'll get more traffic that way too.

    10. Thank you for this post:

Don't forget the industry's standard, too: Always get feedback on ebay from any person who buys from you. It increases your standing and your brand name on ebay, and it's just something ebay sellers need in general.
