Etsy is a great place to start up shop with handmade items!

Etsy is a marketplace where you can sell the following items:

      - Vintage (20 years or older)
      - Crafting supplies
      - Handmade goods

Here are some reasons why it’s good (for both seller and buyer) :

      - You can sell and buy custom items. On top of this you can usually get made to order products, meaning you can ask the creator to tweak the item to your perfection.
      - Etsy allows you to search sellers by city. Your buyers can search local businesses; this allows for both support of local shops and cuts down on shipping for both parties!
      - Etsy’s blog the Storque, is constantly updated for both the buyer and seller.

So it’s definitely a niche market, great. Seems like the perfect place for a crafter to start off. How much does it cost to get started, are the fees outrageous?

It is actually very reasonable. Etsy is free to sign up. From there it costs 20 cents to list an item (for a four month period). Once the item is sold there is a 3.5% transaction fee. There is an easy payment system, where each month, all you need to do is click a button!

The forms of payment that Etsy recognizes are PayPal and credit card, the safest ways to transfer funds over the internet.

However, as with any online store it is very important how you market yourself.

      - Take time when creating your username, this will represent both you and your business. Relate it to what you are selling and what you stand for.
      - Choose a vibrant banner, which will draw attention to your page. You can even find users on Etsy that will make a banner for you. You can also request a custom banner.
      - Make sure your picture of avatar is clear; try using your favorite photograph of an item like those you are selling.
      - Provide a lot of information in your profile, the more you say about your business the greater the chance for interested parties to make purchases.
      - When you list your items, make sure the pictures do it justice.
      - Don’t forget to promote your Etsy shop!!!!

Etsy is a great place to find some really cool items! The sellers are very appreciative and in most cases are even willing to gift-wrap and include a hand written note if you are buying an item for a gift.

Setting up shop on Etsy is a great decision. People looking for handcrafted items do not have to search through the hundreds of items on eBay. Here you know whatever you buy (aside from vintage items) is completely handmade. Etsy does not consider adjustments and alterations of items to be hand crafted.

Etsy provides the much needed respect that these artists need! It’s a great place for up and comers to be discovered!!
