eBay Business Account - Should I use my personal account or ?

I have had a personal account for a long time on e-bay and I have some great feedback ratings. I want to start selling some of my product on e-bay. Should I set up a new account (business name) and sell or can I use my personal account?

I like that I have the feedback already, but I want my company name on it too?

Hi Leahw, that depends on what you mean by "my product".

If you are reselling unwanted personal goods you can use a personal eBay account.

However if you are planning to resell as a business, ie for profit, then you will need to either upgrade your existing personal eBay account to an eBay business account, or setup a new eBay account as a business account. Full details are available at How to register as a business and Upgrading your PayPal account to a Premier or Business account

Please note: You can have multiple eBay accounts provided that they use different email addresses and that they are not used to purchase from one another, or for shill bidding (Shill bidding policy). You can have maximum 1 PayPal account for each of your businesses and maximum 1 personal account.

An advantage of having an eBay business account is that you can list more concurrent eBay auctions/listings than with a personal account (full benefits at Can I register my business?). With a PayPal business account you can also benefit from reduced transaction processing rates (depending on your total monthly sales volume) and you can accept credit card/PayPal payments directly from your website.

Banks also require you to setup a business account if you are reselling for business. Business bank accounts generally have a monthly maintenance charge, however you will get additional benefits over time, including a Business Account Manager, access to credit facilities unavailable to individuals, etc.

The IRS also requires that you notify them of your new trading activity, and that you claim your trading income for tax purposes.

That is great information. I don't mean my personal product. I mean the items I sell for my home owned business. I'm a drop shipper of many products. I was thinking that I should set up a business e-bay account. I didn't know that you had to have one to be able to sell.

Leahw if you are reselling for profit then you are a business. And as a business you are legally required to trade as one (on eBay and in the eyes of your government, which requires that you notify them of your trading activity).

Question: when you say you are a drop shipper, do you mean to say you are a drop shippee? A drop ship agent?

A drop shipper is a supplier who holds stock and ships on your behalf to your customers. A drop ship agent is a retailer who uses drop shippers.
