Yeah people make money, but not everyone. There is lot of hard work involved. And of course careful planning. Ebay is huge there is no doubt about it. I read recently that in a couple of years sales on the net will cross the $100 billion mark and ebay is definitely a big part of this internet business.

Ebay auctions provide a level playing field to all. Everyone is operating at the same level and that’s great.

Selling through ebay auction can help you earn a nice little income. Many people make their living by selling things on ebay. However, my advice would be to start out slowly and then if you feel comfortable enough then you can do this on a full time basis.

Before you start your ebay business, it is important to experience buying from ebay. The motto is: become a customer before you become a seller. Why? It will help you understand how ebay works. It is like getting your feet wet before you learn how to swim.

More importantly, you will understand how a customer feels and work - this is very important.

Okay now that you have got some experience on Ebay, you can start thinking about selling.

There are literally thousands of things that can be sold on ebay. However, a good way to start would be to sell something that you already own - maybe a piece of jewelry or a watch.

The benefits of selling something that you already have are:

You already have the thing in your possession, so it is easy for you to take pictures of it and post a detailed listing of it.

Since you already have it, buyers are more likely to trust you.

You don’t need to pay any upfront cost. If you end up making a mistake, it won’t cost you so much.

You will gain good experience. And you can build on this experience to expand your business in the future.

You can start the business right away.

There’s a lot of stuff that you can sell on ebay provided that you are willing to invest your time and efforts. However, I feel that before you find out what you can sell, you should find out what you “CAN’T” sell. Let me just give you a short list of what you can’t sell on ebay:

      used clothing
      weeds and seeds
      slot machines
      tobacco
      real estate
      stolen property
      travel
      securities and stocks
      guns
      lotto tickets
      manufacturer’s coupons
      animal products
      native American artifacts and crafts
      used cosmetics
      event tickets
      credit cards
      currency
      drugs
      fundraising or charity listings
firearms, knives and weapons including, pepper spray stun guns, etc.
sell items from prohibited countries like, Cuba or Iran
      IDs, licenses, government documents
      Racial or ethnically offensive material

For a complete list you can always browse the official ebay site. Make sure you do it.

Just like to add: it’s okay to sell used clothing, but mention it. Can’t sell used undergarments. No exceptions here.

How do I decide what is lucrative to sell on ebay? Should I just follow the trend?

NO. Following the trend will not always work. Research is very important even if you end up deciding selling a product that is popular amongst buyers. The first question that you need to ask is, does it have a market? If there is demand out there, then go right on. If the demand is there, then ask yourself- can it survive the shipping? You do not want items returned back because they arrived in damaged condition. Is it worth the shipping cost? Get the math right. Make sure that the item you are selling is not on the prohibited list. The list above is quite good.

Check out the competition before you start to sell. What are their pricing? Are they doing okay? This will help you get the price right.
