Is Craigslist A Profitable Selling Platform?

Hi everybody. I’m a regular user of Ebay but have just heard about Craiglist. Does anybody here know if Craiglist if a profitable selling platform? In fact does anybody know what exactly it is….I’m not completely sure I understand how it works.

Any kind of information would be helpful.

Craiglist is a popular online community network that mostly features free online classified ads categorized by housing, sale, services,...etc. With 30 million visits per month, it would make for a reasonably strong selling platform for almost any kind of goods or services.

Given that it allows free listings, it would be safe to assume a higher profitability as well.

If the listings are free, how does the site make money then? Does it charge a commission on the sale price?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that all listings except job related and a few adult entertainment portions are free. The site has sub domains in more than 400 cities across the world and promises a very wide reach to the seller who gets to list non job related products and services for free without having to pay any commission.

The site owners were never very commercially inclined and intended the place more as a community.

Craigslist makes a constant effort to maintain a scam free platform. One of the reasons they charge for job and adult listings is because of the amount of spam and fraud that would otherwise get submitted in those categories. It used to be that craigslist's job categories were flooded with ficticious job offers and rip off home based "opportunities". It all changed somewhat since they started charging.

If you choose to list in the job categories, on one hand it can be extremely effective to identify suitable candidates in a short period of time and thus bypass agency fees, however you should also be aware that scammers have been known to harvest employers details to subsequently send out fake job opportunities to their spam lists. If you must list a job opportunity, for example because you want to outsource some of your ebiz tasks, consider filtering replies by first sending a questionnaire, then asking to fax the questionnaire back (rather than email it). Then, and only then, release your company/website details to the applicant. Few scammers will send a fax, because it is more likely to reveal their true location.

If you are planning to sell on craigslist, you are likely to receive a number of scam enquiries, in a format similar to "I am currently in the US but my son is in Nigeria and I want to send him a gift. Do you ship to Nigeria?". Ignore any odd requests and beware that PayPal does not protect you for transactions outside of eBay.

I think it is important for sellers to increase the number of sites they use for sales. I’ve never used Craiglist myself but am told that it is a fantastic selling platform. It allows links back into your own website which helps traffic to your own site. Who does that in today’s day and age?

Craiglist is the 7th largest selling platform in the US and somewhere around the 33rd in the world. It makes a lot of sense to put your postings on craiglist. Not saying that you should stop using Ebay just add Craiglist as a selling platform as well.
Not using it can only be a disadvantage.

Craiglist is pretty unique in the way that it is not very commercially oriented. The stated objective is to connect buyer and seller. In fact they promote people getting together for exchange of cash and goods by not having any payment system of their own.

Incidentally Ebay owns 25% equity in Craiglist. That should tell you something.

I didn't realise that Craigslist now charges for some ads. Great idea and it makes the site much more attractive to me. I always thought of it as a bit of a joke to be honest. The last time I looked it was all about 'missed connections', which read like a fantasy romance novel!
