      What are common dropshipping mistakes?

      What are common dropshipping mistakes? I’m thinking of setting up an online dropshipping business but want to know what to look out for so I can be better prepared. Any advice is welcome.

      It’s good you’re asking before diving straightaway into dropshipping. Many, who’ve gone before you, did so, without really knowing or understanding what they are getting themselves into. They made mistakes that you can learn from. The most common mistakes people new to dropshipping make are:

      • Not taking the time to build a complete business plan – this is probably the most critical step for any new business to succeed.

      You’ll need to do some research and spend a little time putting it together. But it’ll be well worth it because it’s the barometer for the level of success you can expect to achieve.

      Consider this, you probably don’t go on vacation without putting together some sort of plan of the places you want to visit, the sights you want to see, where you’ll stay and restaurants you’d like to eat at. If you just show up in some major city without an idea of what to do or see, your vacation is sure to be a bust. You’ll end up staying at the first hotel you come across, that has vacancies, you’ll waste time researching the hot spots for sightseeing, and you’ll miss out on the best restaurant in town. And you won’t have a clue how much your vacation would cost you.

      OK, I see what you’re getting at. You’re right about the vacation thing. So I just need to carry that analogy over to a plan for my business.

      Pretty much yes. A couple of suggestions to help you get started are:

      • Make a list of each of your business goals (start by brainstorming, you can organize and prioritize later on).

      • Once you have your list of business goals, create sub-lists under each one that includes the steps you need to take to reach each goal.

      Other than the obvious decision I have to make - which product or products I’ll include in my dropshipping line, I guess I also need to consider how I’m actually going to handle the dropshipping.

      That’s right. Other things you’ll need to consider include:

      • How you’ll market your products and your business.

      • How you’ll manage the customer service aspect – order taking, order entry, phone calls, complaints, returns…

      • How you’ll manage the actual order fulfillment – what company will you use to ship your product, will you ship overseas (if you do, that opens a whole new can of worms for you to deal with)

      Once you’ve decided on a dropshipping product line, you’ll be able to more easily calculate all the financials. Again, a well-thought and well-executed business plan will be the foundation for your business. If you’re not experienced in putting one together, you should consider paying a bit of money upfront to have a professional assist you. That’ll be a good investment for you that should have many happy returns.

      Maybe I’ll do as you suggest and get some help. There must be people out there who’ve put together a business plan for this type of business. Now, you mentioned the need to use a professional, legitimate dropshipping company. I did want to ask anyone who’s following this discussion - what are the things I should look for when researching dropshippers for my products?

      I can tell you there are a ton of illegitimate dropshippers out there. They’ve messed up my orders and that’s all led to complaints I’ve had to deal with from my own customers and the resulting loss of business.
