How to handle returns with a dropshipper

I am looking to get into the dropshipping business, but one question that I have is, how am I supposed to handle dropshipping returns? Is there a lot that I need to know?

There are a couple of ways that you can do this, and what you chose to do, will depend on your drop shipper’s policy.

If your dropshipper does not take returns, then you may just have to bite the bullet. Since the dropshipping business is one where businesses sell to businesses, so they may not accept returns generally. If the product was not in good condition for them to accept, then you would have to take the product back yourself and give a refund to your customer.

If you are selling clothes and the tags were removed or if you were selling something else and it appeared to be used, then you can still resell it in an auction. I know people who sell lingerie and have had a lot of returns but just managed to turn those around and resell them. If you have some sort of product that comes in a bottle, something that you can easily tell if it has been used, then you may just have to face the situation.

If your dropshipper does take returns (most of them will only take returns if there is a good reason, like a problem with the product), then you have to work with your dropshipper and the customer to figure out how to do this. You will want to keep in contact with your dropshipper throughout the process, and check to make sure you know what the dropshipper’s policy on returns is (these can vary from company to company, so check to make sure what that particular company’s policy is).

First, contact the dropshipper and let them know what has happened. Explain why the customer wants to return the product. Give your customer the return address, and keep in contact with your customer, this will really help you in your customer service after the sale.
