Microsoft's Xbox controller was the primary controller for Xbox consoles, developed at the Game Developers Conference in 2000. This controller was used everywhere in the world except Japan, where Japan adopted the Xbox S controller. Later in 2002, the Xbox S controller was launched worldwide, in typical Japanese fashion, where products are first tested in their domestic market and exported worldwide only once they prove successful in their homeland.

In 2005, Microsoft released the Xbox 360 controller at the E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo). This controller comes in both wired and wireless versions and is compatible with PCs. This version of controllers has almost the same features as the Xbox S controller, with the introduction in 2007 and 2010 of limited editions like the Halo3, Spartan Green, Dragon Design, Radioactive Design and Fable3. A standard Xbox 360 controller comes with features such as eleven digital buttons, two analog triggers, two analog sticks and a digital D-pad.

Later in August 31 2010, Microsoft revealed a new design for the Xbox 360 controller, replacing the wireless controller bundle with the play and charge kit. The 2010 Xbox controller features an adjustable directional pad which can be switched between a disc type D-pad or a plus shaped D-pad. This new controller was released in Europe in February 2011.

Recently on November 22 2013, Microsoft has introduced the successor to the Xbox 360, the Xbox one to the UK gaming market. The Xbox one controller comes with nearly forty minor and major improvements over the Xbox 360 controller. Some exclusive features that have been added to the Xbox One controller include trigger rumble motors, battery pack flush with controller, plus-shaped d-pad and a micro USB port.
