Importing Quality Wooden Toys from China - EU Toy Safety Regulations

      Hi,

I am a retailer in London with 3 stores and an online transactional website, which specialises in children's quality wooden toys. I am now looking to source these from China. They have to be good quality. Can anyone recommend how I should go about this, or does anyone know any reputable factories that I should approach?

      Many thanks

      Karen

      Hi Karen,

      Welcome to Wholesale Forum

Importing toys from China can be a very tedious process. You as the importer are responsible for testing that the toys you import into the EU meet current labeling and composition regulations. As the importer, you can also be held liable for any injuries caused to children by the toy.

Every part of a toy needs to comply with multiple sets of EU regulations imposed by the European Toy Safety Directives before a toy can be legally resold in the EU market. Materials used like paint, wood or metals all need to comply with the regulations set by the European Toy Safety Directives, and toys containing electrical parts need to comply with additional regulations. You can contact a test house to test the toy you are interested in importing into the EU market, they can also provide further information on EU toy safety regulations. Have a look at the following international inspection, verification, testing and certification company:Any toy imported into the EU market should bear the CE mark, which is not just a sticker but a full certification of compliance. The toy should also comply with the European standard EN 71 which specifies all EU safety requirements for toys.

Your risk when buying from China is that you can come across manufacturers who will do anything to sell you their toys, because in the end they will never be held accountable for any of the liabilities you bear as the importer. They will even provide you with fake testing documents, tricking you into believing their toys are safe and legal to resell in the UK. We suggest contacting a legal consultant who can guide you through the process of testing and importing toys into the UK.

When importing and reselling toys from China, we suggest getting yourself a good liability insurance just in case.

Have a look at the following Hong Kong sources for children's toys:To find many verified trade suppliers of toys from China, Hong Kong and all over the world, try using the three largest online trade directories of verified wholesale suppliers eSources, Wholesale Deals and Worldwide Brands. All three list thousands of verified wholesalers, distributors, manufacturers and drop shippers.

Have a look at the following results:

Chinese and Hong Kong Suppliers of ToysGlobal Suppliers of ToysIf you decide to source from China, the best way to ensure you are sourcing quality toys is to either plan a business trip to China yourself, or contact a reliable Chinese sourcing agent who can visit the factories on your behalf and evaluate toys following your specific needs.

      Hi Karen,

We have some experience of sourcing "wooden toys" for a UK based client and I can tell you, it can be a troublesome product to import if the supplier is not cooperative and qualified as it reques commodity inspection in China. which many of the smaller suppliers are not willing to do.
