Another Option for Sourcing from China - What are other Possibilities

Hello. I’m a newbie and having some challenges getting started. I keep hearing of all these Chinese sources being scammers and the products from China are dodgy. What other better options do I have if I’m not sourcing from China?

As you can guess, not all Chinese sources are scammers. But we have all heard enough about bad experiences and bad products so this has become the perception. If you do insist on developing relationships in China it is best to deal directly with factories instead of middlemen.

Now, there are several other choices available than taking your chances in China and they can be closer to home than you think.

Before I go into the some other ideas of where you can source goods I want you to know that there are great sources in every corner of the world. And short of actually going to different countries around the world and developing personal relationships with suppliers (which is a good way to do it) you are going to want to start at least in your home country if not in your own home town.

I’ll give you some different ideas to source products you are more familiar with. If you want to reduce the doubt you have in the products you want to sell, then you should know a lot about the products you are selling. Choose those that you are most familiar with. You are going to be able to induce your confidence into the psyche of the buyer when you are certain you know you are selling good products.

With each of these I suggest you continue posting to this forum and checking reviews with your fellow forum participants.

Have a look at Korean suppliers. It is well known in some circles that the products made in Korea are of a higher quality than those from China. They may be a bit more expensive but the quality is superior.

Source liquidated goods from official distributors. Think of the brands and goods that you use personally, then try to go to the source of those goods and but liquidated products. Search on the internet or in this forum for official distributors of a particular brand and contact them. Then you know you are getting the real thing and on you go.

When choosing this method you will want to familiarize yourself with the following terms so you speak the lingo with the distributors. You will be looking for “Shelf pulls”, “first run goods”, “blemished goods”, “factory seconds”, “closeout specials”, “retail returns”, and “remainders”.

The point is you will be buying real, quality, branded goods at a discount and you will not have to worry about cheap knockoffs with inferior quality.

Go to trade shows. They usually require proof that you are really in the business in the form of registration of your corporation which is a relatively easy process. Here at the trade shows you will be able to meet wholesalers face to face instead of just from a website. You will also have the chance to see the goods in person.

Search for import wholesalers in your area. These folks will have already brought the imported goods into your country. Now they will be a little more expensive because they have already done the importing and shipping. But a chance to see the goods and meet the people before you buy will likely leave you feeling more comfortable with your decisions.

This should give you a bunch of ideas about where to find new sources of goods near your home. And keep posting your experiences to get more feedback.

If you can sell the products with a big profit, you can try to find some wholesalers or importers in the US, other wise, you have to deal with Chinese to buy from China.

In my opinion, if you want to import goods from china, but you are afraid of scammers at the same time, you can find a friend in China to help you find and export...

I really think Chinese people and products are very different from what you imagine now. If you don't believe this point, I suggest you ask some old oversea trade friends in your location. You now, the market is competing heavily. As a real business people, it is impossible for him or her to cheat some money because they want to build up a long-term business relationship and in China even if USD10000 is not so much, it is unnecessary for them to take a risk to cheat you, which will effect their business development. Of course, if you met a scammer but not a business people, it will be another story. You have to judge it is really business people or scammer. Good luck to u!

You can dropship or buy wholesale.

Not all factories are scammers - there are a few bad apples that give a bad name to the rest of them.

I agree with Alex and others that not all Chinese suppliers are scammers. It does not matter if you import from China or other country, please take following precautionary measures.

Verify credentials of vendor. It can be asking about copy of business certificate, physical address of business office/factory, name of directors etc. If you are placing goods worth over 20ft container try to negotiate payment by letter of credit even if it cumbersome. Always take pre shipment sample and match with sample that you got when placing order. You can hire an independent QC company such as SGS or DNV to carry out pre shipment inspection. Visit your vendor or ask him to supply pictures of office and factory. Get reference of their existing customers. Do a google search about their company, name of person or email address. You may get an idea about them by looking at their google foot print. Search their shipment history using Panjiva or similar website.

Once you are reasonably sure about your vendor, do place order but keep trail of agreement via email as it will be needed as valid proof if you need to address your complaint against exporter in his country which can normally be done via your country’s embassy in importer’s country.

We are need of a broker to handle our purchasing in China. We currently have need of 20 to 25 40' containers yearly, more to come. We have a source factory in Jinan City, Shondong Provice China that we wish to set up continuing business. We need a broker to handle the transactions and protect our funds until good product is delivered to our warehouse.

It is better to have payment by letter of credit with pre shipment inspection clause. Since you need 20 to 25 container it is advisable to employ some inspection agent in China who can carry out unbiased inspection at regular intervel.
