RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. As it shows, it means syndication, i.e. distribution of informative content simultaneously across the Web on a number of sites.

It is a format that helps websites to distribute and share news stories and info with other sites within minutes.

So you’re redoing? Does it mean you had no RSS feed earlier? Way too late buddy! Do it soon. Can help you circulate your product info quite well.

But what’s RSS feed exactly? And how do I use it to circulate my product?

Well, it’s an XML document that comprises informative text and other metadata which includes publishing and authorship details. You can find great instructive stuff if you Google this - ‘how to use RSS feeds’.

It’s very simple. Just imagine a newspaper packaging all its latest stories within a file, and then distributing the file to hundreds of other sites (who will in turn all publish the newspaper's articles on their sites). It means making their news and reports available on a wider range of sites, and the result is more readers. I heard Reuters is reaching out with its online news content to over 900 Web sites and portals working this way.

You could be doing the same with your list of products: by asking your programmer to create an RSS feed of your products, you can then use your feed to publish your products on various sites quickly, for example on Google Product Search. Similarly, you can create an RSS feed of your articles for republishing on other sites that support uploading of content via RSS feed.

And, if you use a drop shipper, they might offer RSS feeds themselves, containing the latest product information, including stock level and wholesale price updates. You can then use the drop shipper's RSS files to update your ecommerce website automatically, by updating your resale prices and removing out of stock items.

Yeah that’s right. If a writer who’s subscribed to a syndicate writes anything, his writing gets uploaded on the newswire. Innumerable other papers subscribed to the particular syndicate can use this at once. Well plenty of circulation isn’t it?

But why should I add an RSS feed? How will it promote my website?

What else can circulation mean? Promotion essentially comprises reaching out to maximum masses doesn’t it?

So this indirectly helps in increasing the page traffic of my website?
