How to compile invoices and pro-forma invoices

Hi All. I have a small business and have so far not been giving invoices with all my sales.

A friend just told me that sending invoices to customers was a legal requirement without which I could get into trouble. Could someone please tell me what is the actual case.

How does one compile invoices and pro forma invoices?

That’s ok, don’t worry. I often sell things on Ebay and I don’t give an invoice. I think it’s the seller’s option.

I think all Tax registered businesses are expected to send invoices. As your business grows bigger, you should find out the correct process and play by the rules.
In fact I think there are rules even regarding storing invoices for a certain period of time. Don’t know whether that is applicable for pro forma invoices.

Regardless of the legislation in your country, a business should always issue an invoice for any product or service that you sell. This should be irrespective of the medium employed for the sale. It’s a good business practice and allows you to keep records for all your transactions.

It is also great for tracking orders in case the shipment is misplaced or does not reach on time.

Pro forma invoices have great advantages. They make your business operation look professional regardless of your actual size and increase awareness and reputation of your company.

The first thing that I did when I started my business was to buy a stock package with an invoice option.

I don’t agree. It is just a waste of paper and time. Who’s going to print and store all those invoices?
Also, I send my business card which works just as well to increase awareness. I will rethink if any of my customers asks me for pro forma invoices. So far nobody has.

Customers don’t necessarily ask which is not the same as they don’t expect. Large business customers always require pro forma invoices when they place an order.

I’m not sure how much time and money you save on printing a sheet of paper. Without invoices, I’m not sure how you are able to track stocks, sales trends and suchlike. What about tracking orders? What do you do when a customer calls about their shipment?

You may want to confirm this but I believe that all Tax registered traders are required to issue invoices by law.

I guess I don’t really have a proper business – just sell off and on so I have not faced any problems so far.
