How to check the validity of a UK/EU VAT number?
k – I’m trying to validate one of my customers VAT number. I know that I’m supposed to charge them in the EU VAT, but need to check the validity of the VAT number first because the one they gave me isn’t under the same company name as who I am supposedly dealing with. How do I do this?

This can be all done online, Moorejoseph. It is really easy too. Both of the sites below will allow you to make sure the EU/UK VAT number matches the information your customer has provided you with.
1. EUROPA site - Validation
2. WebCHeck - Select and Access Company Information
Actually the first one is the best way to go, but if you’re checking a Ltd. Company, use the second one.Over 150,000 Verified Sources + Deals 95% Off MSRP + Free Website!

Yes, Whitemark – I forgot to mention that, but you can call the VAT office as well. In fact, I’ve done this a time or two myself and they’ve always been pretty helpful. However, I usually only do this if the online method doesn’t work.

Sometimes, when you’re dealing with overseas businesses the system doesn’t work as well as it was designed to. And of course, it being online it may crash every now and then too.

It will validate the company name and address for sure. Sometimes, if the information is available, it will also confirm the telephone number and contact person too.
Another way to validate who the VAT number belongs to is by calling the HMRC. If you go this route, what HMRC requires is that you give them the complete VAT number, company name and the address information you have on hand for them. If any of that information doesn’t match up, then they won’t be able to validate the VAT number for you. You can call them at 0845 101 9000.

No, neither site charges for the initial verification.
However, WebCheck gives you the ability to order copies of documents, view company information through reports and even monitor a company and be notified if any new documents are received from that company. Those are extra services provided by WebCheck that will cost you.
