Trade Tang is a difficult marketplace to navigate, depending on what you’re looking for. The Internet is full of complaints about Trade Tang, but it’s not exactly a scam if you remember these essentials:

Recognize that most of the branded products for sale on Trade Tang are fake—don’t expect to pay $50 for an iPhone and have it be the real deal, for example. Same logic applies for other electronics, designer clothing and jewelry. Most branded items that sell for unbelievably low prices on Trade Tang are almost always Chinese copies of the genuine product. That’s fine for some people but not acceptable for others, so consider your purchase carefully.

Check the shipping costs before you commit. A seemingly-low price on a large shipment may prove too good to be true, and then the seller hits you with thousands of dollars in shipping costs.

Remember that Trade Tang uses an escrow payment system to protect both buyers and sellers. If you aren’t satisfied with your purchase, you can open a dispute and have your money refunded.

Overall, just be careful. If you are okay with not having the highest-quality goods and want a good price on made-in-China products, Trade Tang may work for you.

Do not buy anything off Trade Tang! Whatever you buy will be cheap quality at best and totally useless at worst—and their escrow system is a joke.

Thanks for the replies. What do you mean by “escrow system?”

Trade Tang is a third-party seller; they simply provide the contact between the sellers that advertise on their site and the potential buyers. When you buy something from a seller, Trade Tang holds the money in escrow until the product is delivered so that if you are dissatisfied with the product, the seller can (theoretically) return your money.

If you do want to return your purchase, you contact customer service at Trade Tang and they deal with the negotiations between you and the seller.

Yeah the escrow system sounds like a guarantee until you try to deal with them. Their customer service is impossible and the sellers are convinced that their product is good, so they don’t want to give you your money back. Also, even if you do convince them to refund your money, they want you to pay for the cost of shipping the item back, which is expensive!

I tried to figure out exactly how Trade Tang’s escrow system works but they don’t seem to really go into detail about it anywhere on their site…seems weird to me. Anyone else know more about the escrow system?

Trade Tang doesn’t reveal their escrow service provider anywhere on their website, which is the final straw as far as I’m concerned. Any legitimate business that works with an escrow service reveals the service with which they work.

Trade Tang’s customer service department is horrible! If you email them about a purchase, you just get an automated response back about returning the package with a tracking number, at your own cost. A buyer can only get in touch with a vendor through Trade Tang, so it puts you in a bad position.

Trade Tang is definitely a use-at-your-own-risk marketplace, but only because of the sellers on it. I’ve had both good and bad experiences buying merchandise in bulk from vendors on Trade Tang and the best way to make sure that you won’t lose out is to do your research beforehand and check out the sellers’ ratings (like on eBay) before you buy.
