Well I can offer you some tips but theyíre only a small part of the overall research you should be doing when working on Aliexpress. You need to be as vigilant as possible. Remember, as small business owners, we are not only the most popular targets, no oneís really willing to stick up for us either. So we need to know what weíre getting into. Hereís my advice on how to spot a scammer.

ē They sell EVERYTHING. While this technically isnít a scam, it means youíre probably not working with the actual manufacturer, youíre working with a trader which means you wonít get the best prices
ē They donít answer your questions. Itís your responsibility to clear everything up BEFORE you place an order. If they donít get back to you or take a long time to do so, donít work with them
ē They donít have their location name in their title. All legit companies will have their location as part of their company name. If they do have a location, next you should check their logo, marketing material, website and email name as well as their Alibaba contact address and showroom name.
ē Theyíre in Fujian. This isnít the most politically correct thing to say but itís true. Most scams come from this area. I never deal with anyone from Fujian.
ē They sell brand names. This is hands down the most common scam. If ANYONE claims to be able to give you brand name goods, walk away.

You mentioned that some people had trouble getting refunds from Aliexpress. Do you know any more about that?

Iíve met a few people who placed orders which were supposed to come in about 2 to 3 days. And the shipping is DHL, which they paid extra for. All of these people didnít mind because hey, itís DHL and they were cool with it, as long as they got their merch.

What happened was that after three days, no merch came. So they tried and cancelled the sale and according to the Aliexpress deal, they should get an automatic refund. That didnít happen. Instead, the company Ďinvestigatedí the claim to find out why the seller hadnít shipped. One guy I know is still waiting on his refund. With these other folks, the refund eventually came through but theyíre not going to be trying that again.

Yeah but the fact remains that Aliexpress promises refunds and that the product will be shipped in a few days. And the shipping rates are crazy, let me tell you that. They do all that and donít follow through.

I want to mention here that Iíve already heard of a scam thatís running on Aliexpress. The scammers seem legit enough on the site and you might get interested enough to check out their other products. You ask about their payment terms and they say they donít accept payments through Escrow. Red flag. No matter what theyíre promising you, donít do it if they wonít do it through Escrow.

Yeah, I heard of one scam on Aliexpress where they actually set up a fake Escrow site, can you believe it? You gotta be super careful if youíre going to deal with anyone out there.

Wow. All this definitely makes me want to reconsider the whole thing. But my buddy had a totally legit transaction! Should I warn him? You think he might get suckered later?

LOL, this is the funny part; there ARE legit sellers on alibaba. And theyíll do great work for you. Looks like your buddy just hooked up with the right people. Like I said before, Aliexpress is great for both sides if both sides are legit.

I think the products you deal with make a difference here as well. Like youíre more likely to run into scammers if youíre looking for electronics or clothing. But with things like handicrafts, garden tools or car ornaments, youíll probably find a lot of good and honest companies.

    11. Thank you for this post:
