Is it worthwhile to sell products with SMC?

I am a wholesale businessman and I was looking at using SMC for drop shipping. I have heard good and bad things about them, and I just can’t figure out, at least from the people I talk to, whether or not it is worth it to try to use SMC to sell my products?

So, yea, you can use SMC, and they can make you money, but maybe not as an Ebay drop shipper. But first, let me go back and explain some of what SMC is and how they work.

SMC stands for Speciality Merchandise Corporation. It is a business that has been around for a while. If you have trouble sleeping, you have probably seen these guys advertising on late night infomercials. They say they can help you start your own business by selling cheap merchandise that they have.

And that is kind of true. It works like this: You pay a monthly fee to join their organization. This monthly fee can be as little as twenty five bucks a month. Once you join their organization, you can buy things from their catalog for fairly cheap and then resell them at a better price where you are. This is the original drop shipper. They have a lot of inventory, and they have a lot of experience, so they are fairly trusted.

Sounds easy right? Yea, that is the way that it always is with any business, until the rubber hits the pavement.

There are several problems with SMC. Simply put, there are these three issues:

      • SMC’s mindset is still based in an older model of doing business -
      • SMC’s prices are good, but not good enough to compete on Ebay.
      • SMC is so well known that it is hard to compete with other people using SMC on Ebay.

Here is my take on these problems SMC has. Like I said, they are a fairly old company, started well before Ebay, so some of their business concepts are still in the pre-Ebay age. The way that people originally made money was not through Ebay, but by marketing to local customers offline.

Another problem with SMC is their prices are not particularly competitive today, at least not on Ebay. Ebay is a worldwide market, so it always pushes folks towards the cheapest price. SMC offers good prices, but not great prices. Ebay requires great prices to compete. A lot of people on Ebay find stuff at garage sales and other really bargain prices. So, they can turn a profit and still offer lower prices. With SMC, you just can’t do that kind of thing.

Plus, there is a final problem with SMC. It has been around so long and is so well known, so it is very popular. That sounds like a good thing, but, in Ebay, it is not. If everybody knows about SMC, then lots of people will use it as a drop seller. How do you think that you can compete with them. You and those guys are all selling things at the same price, you have no real good way to compete.

Thanks for that answer, it gives me a lot of good direction and helps me figure out how to work the SMC and Ebay thing. You mentioned that SMC was not a good way to do the Ebay wholesale thing, but, if you can’t make money doing SMC on Ebay, how can you use SMC to make money?

Yea, great question, there are a lot of ways to make money with SMC, but it is all old school, very little chance to do things online.

First, you can go to a local flee market and set up a table. Before you have the flea market, figure out what kind of things the flea market is selling and what kind of things the flea market is not selling. See if you can order those things that they are not selling from SMC. The prices that SMC has are pretty good and will probably get some sales at a flea market, depending on where you are and how web savy your buyers are.

You can also try to talk with local interest groups to find a niche market. For example, if you notice that SMC has some bird feeders that are a lot cheaper than what folks are buying in stores locally, you can try to sell bird feeders. You can either go through the local stores, trying to sell things to them for cheaper than whoever they are buying from. Or you could try and go directly to the buyer. Talk to local birding enthusiasts and see if they want to buy them. But, don’t just think about your local Audubon Society. See if you can get creative. Try to talk to the local senior citizen center, and see if any of the seniors are interested in buying bird feeders. See if you can set up a table at the Senior Center.

Also, you could try to make a small catalog and circulate it locally. This is a great way to expand your SMC sales.

Hey, I had tried to do some Ebay wholesales using SMC and I had a lot of trouble trying to turn a profit. I eventually gave things up. Everybody who is making money on Ebay is selling things for a lot lower prices than anything I could find on SMC.

I just wanted to put out a counterpoint to everything that I have heard on this forum. I have actually been able to make a profit on Ebay with SMC, but I will agree that it is difficult, so you have to be careful. Get to know your product, and try to get a niche market in your Ebay sales. You can’t do it if you are trying to sell everything.

I have been doing some wholesaling for nearly two years. I started out trying to use SMC on Ebay and that nearly made me quit. Don’t do it. It is not worth it. It is so hard to turn a profit using SMC, find a better drop shipper.
