How To Ship Small Items Via USPS

Hi guys, can anyone advise me on the best way to ship small items. I have been spending tons of money on this lately. This is because I operate an online store which is largely based on shipping products to customers. Shipping takes up a large part of my costs and any saving there would substantially help me profit. I currently use UPS and am planning to switch over to USPS. Is it worthwhile? Any suggestions?

Even within the USPS there are so many services that you could actually look at their price list and wonder what they are selling. There are so many variants even in the postage services business itself. However USPS in my opinion has the best deals for all types of packages. But choosing what service to use within USPS is a bit of a task, isnt it?

It can be a bit of a struggle to decide which service to use. First Class or Priority Mail are good choices for smaller packages. Using Priority Mail has the benefit of getting your boxes or envelopes free at the Post Office. Service for both is good within the United States. If you sell books, you can use the book rate, but delivery times can be slower than First Class or Express Mail. I haven't compared prices to UPS, but when I sold on ebay a few years ago, I went with USPS because it seemed to be the most reasonable choice at that time. Rates have raised since then.

Of course the services are multiple but it really does not take too much time to figure out. If you use it for 2-3 months, you surely will become a pro at it. Just to provide a basic understanding USPS services are two fold:

First there are 4-5 variants of basic service
Then you can chose amongst 3-4 add on services.

For instance if you have to ship a package you can choose from the following options:

      Express Mail
      Priority Mail
      Flat Rate Mail
      First Class Mail
      Parcel Post
      Media Mail

And you can choose from the add-on services in case you wish to have:

      Proof of delivery
      Protection
      Confirmation

That seems like it has been copy pasted straight off the USPS site. We know the services that USPS offers. Even if we dont we can read it off the website for ourselves. What we are looking for is a way to figure out how to use USPS to make better deliveries particularly for the smaller package sizes.

Hey I can explain some of them. For instance flat rate box is my favorite. This is a great service if you are sending something which occupies less space but is bulky. This works in a really simple way. You are given a box and you could fill it with iron or you could fill it with feathers. As long as it is in the box, USPS will ship it for a flat fee.

If you are selling items which are small in size but heavy in weight, this works out t be a great deal. The savings are as to the tune of 50% if you compare other companies in the shipping business.

P.S: You cannot ship items that are prohibited by USPS. For a list, log on to their website.

That’s a great idea guys. Sure I will use this flat rate package system. If it reduces my shipping cost by 50% it would be great. I will be on top of this world…!!

Dont be so sure. Seems you are new to the online business. Nothing here comes without strings attached. If its cheap, maybe its because it ought to be. We all know that while shipping it is basically a trade-off between time and money. The faster that you want to ship, the more money it will cost you. USPS is cheap; so what does it automatically mean? As far as I can understand, slower deliveries. Just log on to their website and you will be amazed that this might possibly be the only shipping company which does not have an option for guaranteed overnight delivery.

That certainly isn’t true. Of course the services provided by USPS are by far the cheapest if you compare it with any other service provider but they are by no means substandard. They do not offer guaranteed overnight delivery but they do have an option to make guaranteed delivery within 2 working days. This is called Express mail and in case of failure to make good the promise, they will give you the money back.

Besides if you are an online seller who would require you to make the delivery so soon? Generally, the time required is, three to four working days. In case anyone needs it in super priority let them bear the additional cost. For an average consumer USPS shall work fine. I wouldn’t call this a trade-off really. You are getting what is right for the purpose at a price which is much lower than the average market price.

Another reason why you should use USPS for all your shipping particularly for the small items is because USPS charges by per ounce of weight as compared to per pound by most shippers. So if you are shipping a smaller package, you end up paying a lot less. Try and calculate and you will just be amazed at the cost savings that they offer.
