The best way to verify a Hong Kong business is through the Hong Kong Integrated Companies Registry Information System. The website is http://www.icris.cr.gov.hk/csci/. Here’s how you can use the site:

      1. You must have either the business name or the company registration number (business license number).

      2. Go to the site and click on the bottom link that says “To Enter Companies Registry Cyber Search Centre, please click ”

      3. Another page will display and you must select if you are a registered user, an unregistered user, or if you want to register. If you do not wish to register just click on the unregistered user button.

      4. The next page is the terms and usage agreement for the site. Review those. If you are OK with the terms click Accept.

      5. A page will appear and one of the selections is to Search. Choose to search by Company Name or Register of Charges.

      6. A search screen will display where you can enter your search information. This will let you know if the company is legitimate or if they are operating under a different name/registration. Be sure to THOROUGHLY review the information displayed and make notes of what is displayed.

      7. If you feel comfortable that the business is registered legally as a Hong Kong business, you can then do further research.

      8. You can check eBay, Google, Amazon, or other online sites to see if the company is selling through the sites. Most sites will give you a rating and display feedback on the company. This can also provide you with some information about possible competitors that you might face in selling the same products.

      9. There are businesses that will do the work of verifying the Hong Kong business for you. If you want to pay, yes, they can do this work, but to me the job seems easy enough for a typical businessperson to handle on their own.

Thanks. What if the Hong Kong business does not show in the registry? Do I assume the business is not legitimate?

After you have checked the registry and the business is not listed, you can contact the Chinese embassy. Ask for the Trade Attaché. When you speak with the Trade Attaché explain that you would like assistance in verifying a Hong Kong business. This is a lot more work but you can do this if you want to take some extra steps. If you are not fluent in Chinese this could be difficult but the embassy should have someone available to help you.

You can roll the dice and try doing business with the company. You should always opt for PayPal or escrow as the mode of payment, so that your money is safe. This payment method doesn’t allow scammers to run away with your money because you have the option to not pay if you are not satisfied with the product. The other acceptable option is to pay through T/T(Telegraphic Transfer) or L/C(Letter of Credit) as most trade transactions are done through these.

Please note PayPal is not 100% safe. It is only guaranteed if there is a third party escrow service involved, which holds the funds until you confirm receipt of the goods. If there is no such third party escrow involved, the PayPal account holder can simply empty the account and run away with your money. In that case PayPal will be helpless. PayPal is trying to reduce such cases, however it is not yet 100% foolproof.
