Yes, you can make use of Google Keyword tool to find out how many times a word has been searched. For this, you should visit the link https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. This keyword tool is easy to use. You’ve to just enter the word or phrase in the given field. It tells you how many times the keyword has been searched globally as well as locally. It also tells you about the competition this keyword faces. You also get the results for related words or phrases.

As you’re planning to develop a PPC campaign, you could also use Google Traffic Estimator to decide the keywords you should target and what should be your daily budget for the ads.

You could also try NicheBot. This is a paid website. However, before subscribing to their service, you should try their free version.

Overture Keyword Tool by Yahoo is also useful. This gives you the most appropriate keywords for search engine optimization as well as PPC campaigns.

Does this tool give how many times a keyword has been searched for on Yahoo or on all major search engines?

Overture Keyword tool gives results for searches on Yahoo, MSN and Alta Vista. It does not take in to account the searches on Google.

Google is the most popular search engine and therefore I’d suggest that you should use a tool that takes in to account how many times the word has been searched on Google.

You could multiply the search volume that you get through Overture by four to get the total search volume for a keyword on major search engines. The simple rule is that Yahoo gets approximately 25 percent searches and therefore, if you multiply the search volume by four, you’ll get an idea of the total search volume.

I like Wordtracker. This has helped me to choose the appropriate keywords for search engine optimization. Wordtracker is a paid service and it’s therefore better to use their free trial version before buying their services. Their results include the searches on Google too.

One thing that you’ve to be careful about while checking the volume of keywords is that you should pay attention whether the result is for exact, phrase, or broad match. It could greatly affect how you use the keywords in your PPC campaigns.

Exact match means that if you want to know the results for cashmere sweater, then you get the results only for cashmere sweater; the results for black cashmere sweater, long cashmere sweater and the like, won’t be included in your results. But, if you check the results for broad match then all such results would be included.
