This number is necessary to identify a business or person, and it is given by the customs authority in your country. EORI stands for “Economic Operator Registration and Identification.” This number is unique to the European Community and shows a business/person is valid within the entire community. It was created to increase security measures mandated by the Security Amendment, and it makes implementing those measures more effective, since all businesses/persons are identified in a common manner: the method or EORI number is common to all countries within the community.

Thanks for the information. What does customs use the information for?

The Customs authority uses it to exchange information with customs authorities in other countries. Information is also exchanged between customs and government departments, but only regarding customs procedures.

While we’re on the subject, do I need multiple EORI numbers within my company? Can each department have a separate number?

No, you don’t need multiple numbers. Numbers are assigned to a legal entity. That means a sole proprietor, partnership, company or individual. They are not assigned to specific branches, divisions or departments.

Thanks mate. One more: if I already have a TURN number, do I need an EORI?

If you’ve done business since the 2009-2010 fiscal year, you’d know that when EORI was implemented in July 2009, the TURN (Trader Unique Reference Number) system was terminated. However, some aspects of TURN were adopted into the new system, like assigning each legal entity a number.

Organizations that already have a TURN number were, as a matter of course, given an EORI number, which means that you should already have an EORI number. If you want to check to see if your number’s up to date, just go to the European Commission’s EORI Validation website:

      EORI number validation

The format for your number goes as follows:

      • All UK numbers begin with the letters “GB”.
      • This is followed by the 9-digit VAT (Value Added Tax) number.
      • The number ends with a 3-digit combination that typically identifies the country. For example, most UK numbers end with 000.

If I already have a VAT number, will this work in the EORI system?

Maybe. You can check the system to see if your number is valid:

      EORI number validation

Note: VAT Group Registrations numbers will end in a different suffix (when each EO is a separate legal entity).
