PO Box address on eBay.com - is it allowed / safe?

I have been selling electronics on eBay for a couple of months now. For the first time, one of my buyers has asked me to ship the merchandise he bought to a post office box. I would like to know if It is allowed to request shipping to a p.o. box, or do I have to ship to a brick and mortar address?

You are allowed to ship to a post office box. EBay’s Seller Protection Policy used to state that you had to ship parcels to a “confirmed” address, meaning an address you could find on a map. Now if the Transaction Details page says that the transaction is “Eligible,” you are not liable as a seller for sending parcels to a post office box.

How do you know if it is safe or unsafe to ship to a post office box? I just want to take as many precautions as I can to make sure my goods are delivered into the right hands.

For the most part, it is safe to ship to PO Boxes. Moreover, when you send a parcel to a PO Box, the post office will hold it and inform the recipient of its arrival through a note placed in the PO Box. The recipient then has to show identification and sign for the parcel before being allowed to take it, so you know that the person receiving the package is the correct party.

Another advantage is that you do not have to worry about a parcel sitting in the elements, as might happen if a package is delivered directly to a home address.

One reason it may be unsafe to send to a PO Box is because you cannot use a courier service. Also, it is unsafe to send a parcel worth over fifty quid, because if it is lost, you cannot get it back.

Before you send anything to a PO Box, you can check the eBay rating of the buyer you are shipping to. Look at his or her feedback. E-mail or call the buyer to find out if he or she is legitimate.

Why can’t I use a courier service to ship to a PO Box? I would feel much better about my parcel getting to where it needs to go if I was able to do that.

You cannot use a courier service to ship to a PO Box simply because of the fact that courier services do not have access to the post office boxes themselves; they are not government employees.

There is one parcel service that might be able to deliver to a PO Box. It is called ParcelForce and it does deliver to PO Boxes in certain countries when using certain services. I would give your details if I knew exactly where you were shipping to and from. However, it is an easy site to use, so I would encourage you to check it out.
