How Should I Deal with Aggressive and Rude Ebay Buyers?

I have been selling on ebay for more than five years. But since the change in ebay feedback policy, I am finding it difficult to deal with aggressive ebay buyers. Can somebody advise me how should I deal with nasty buyers and avoid feedback extortion?

Buy, you are not alone. Due to the changes made in ebay feedback policy in 2008, sellers are not allowed to leave negative or neutral feedback for buyers. This means a seller is left with only two options – either he or she can leave positive feedback or no feedback.

Exactly! The changes in feedback policy have resulted in feedback extortion, where some of the rude ebay buyers demand free products and services from sellers in exchange for positive feedback otherwise they threaten to leave a bad comment for the seller.

I feel communication is one thing that can avoid these problems. If there’s any problem between you and your buyer, directly speak to them. Nothing is more effective than direct communication. If a buyer sends you a nasty email, do NOT retaliate. You should remain calm and composed and try to help out the buyer in the best possible way. If you face any clear-cut case of feedback extortion, you should report it to ebay. They have really strict policies to deal with matters related to FB extortion.

What are you guys talking about? I’m new to ebay – I’m selling vintage TV memorabilia, and you’re freaking me out! What changes are you talking about? What am I missing here?

Annie, it used to be that an ebay seller or buyer could give positive, negative, or neutral feedback. But, this feedback method was creating some problems. Whenever a buyer used to leave negative feedback for a seller, there was a risk to the buyer that the seller would also leave a bad remark for him or her.

So, ebay introduced some changes in its feedback policy saying that ebay sellers can’t leave negative or neutral feedback for their buyers. However, this change has made things difficult for the sellers. Now some buyers threaten to leave bad FB for sellers unless they give them the product for free or stuff like that.

To deal with this problem of feedback extortion, you should keep a record of all emails and rude remarks from aggressive ebay buyers. This would help you bring your case before ebay.

I have now started verifying the feedback that the buyer has left for others before dealing with him or her. This helps me know if the buyer has a tendency to leave negative feedback for sellers.

I think this is a great idea. But, can you tell me how can I check this feedback?

You can easily check the feedback that a buyer has left for others by clicking “feedback for others” in the feedback tab.
