How do I list products that are available in different colors on eBay?

I want to list a bunch of t-shirts in various sizes and colors. Can I do this with one listing on ebay or do I need to do a bunch of listings?

Starting on October 26th, Ebay has new guidelines regarding duplicate listings for fixed auctions only and your best bet would be to list them under one listing using the drop down menus for variations. For future information here is the important part of the new guidelines (you can find the whole list here http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-multi.html).

      • For any Fixed Price listing, the item offered must be significantly different from the item offered in any of your other Fixed Price listings.
      • In the Fixed Price format, you can have only one listing per item. Multiples of an item can be sold in a multi-quantity Fixed Price listing.
      • If you have more than one user ID, you are limited to one listing per item across all your selling accounts.
      • For items that are made to fit specific products, models, or brands—for example a connector cable, phone charger or auto part—you can have up to five Fixed Price listings per item.
      • New Fixed Price listings no longer receive an automatic allotment of impressions on page one of Best Match search results.
      • Creating two or more listings to sell bundles or "lots" of items that are sufficiently different and clearly satisfy different buyer needs.

These are the available categories for these types of listings:

      • Baby
      • Clothing, Shoes & Accessories
      • Crafts
      • Health & Beauty
      • Home & Garden (most sub-categories)
      • Jewelry & Watches
      • Pet Supplies
      • Sporting Goods

Iíve found it really easy and much better to do options in my listings. I think more customers are finding me since they put this rule in.

This is only for fixed price listings? What if I want to do an auction for them?

Yes, this is only for fixed price listings to eliminate some of the confusion for buyers and level the playing field for sellers (as well as saving you time and money on listings). If you want to do an auction listing, you will have to create separate listings unless you decide to sell them in one lot. If you chose to sell them in lots, the best idea would probably be to create them based on size and include multiple colors. If they are plain shirts this would attract people looking for craft supplies and such.

I personally have not had any of these listings since the change but they have said you can have five variations per listing. I cannot say for sure right now though.

I just went ahead and checked for you (I was curious how this works also). There is a helpful page about variations and how to use them in your listings here Creating a listing with variations.

When you click the “sell an item” button and choose your category, a pop-up window will appear asking you if you want to include variations for the item. From what I can see, you can choose many variation options (I stopped clicking “add” after I hit over 20). There is more than one option as well as adding your own if it is not included in one of the many selections Ebay provides. Using your example of shirts, you will be able to choose a number of colors, sleeve styles, sizes, and materials to add. You can upload pictures of the variations too since Ebay has added a new fee structure for pictures in variation listings. This should result in a listing, which appears similar to any other catalog “order form” where you can choose your options for the product.

If I were you, I would also set up listings of lots by size and list five colors per size. An example would be 10 small shirts in five colors and another lot of 10 in medium with five more colors and so on. This will keep you from getting in trouble with Ebay and you can possibly put a note in the listing details that you have more colors and for customers to contact you or something similar. If a customer is interested in buying one or a particular color you can always point them to the correct listing or write out a guide in your seller FAQs on how to choose the right item in a listing. You can always use the auction format for lots and specific colors and sizes as well since the duplicate rule only applies to fixed price listings.

Oh man! I have a bunch of listings up still, should I take them off?
